Address:Avenida del Puerto y Prado, Habana Vieja
Construction date:1589-1600 |
Current use:
The construction of this fortress started at the same time that of the Morro Castle and they were the most important works of the defensive plan of Havana due to their strategic location in both sides of the entrance to the bay.
A trapezoidal plan with strongholds in its four vertexes and organized around a central square it meets the requirements of a recurrent model of Renaissance fortress.
The sitting below the lot surrounding it allows us to perceive completely the configuration and dimensions of the castle.
The two cylindrical sentry boxes that crowned the strongholds to the Avenida del Puerto are significant elements characterizing this work.
This castle was the venue of the General Staff of the National Navy at the time of the Republic and after the year 1959 it became a School for Militias.
